GIFTED CURRICULUM FOR GRADES K-6

All teachers at Alice Smith provide rigorous, challenging curriculum for each student every day.  Classroom teachers are the first line in providing differentiated curriculum and opportunities for all students to grow at their own levels.  The Gifted Services staff supports classroom teachers by providing additional experiences for students showing high potential and a need for additional challenge.

KINDERGARTEN
Reading
The Gifted Services staff works in partnership with classroom teachers to provide enriched Reading activities designed to meet the needs of Kindergartners who are reading and comprehending significantly above grade level.  Students meet four times each week, during Book Club time, to work on decoding skills, reading comprehension, and writing, using Starfall, Junior Great Books, and Accelerated Reader programs to enhance and develop their skills.

Math/Critical Thinking
Beginning in January, all students participate in enrichment experiences using problem solving activities and inquiry based learning models.  Curriculum from Primary Education Thinking Skills (PETS) and Javits are used for these experiences.  Among the concepts addressed in Kindergarten are creative problem solving, critical thinking, and inventive thinking.

GRADE 1
Reading
The Gifted Services staff works in partnership with classroom teachers to provide enriched Reading activities designed to meet the needs of First Graders reading and comprehending significantly above grade level.  Students meet four times each week, during Book Club time, to improve decoding, comprehension and fluency using Guided Reading, Accelerated Reader, and the Junior Great Books program.

Math/Critical Thinking
All students participate in enrichment experiences using problem solving activities and inquiry based learning models.  Curriculum from Primary Education Thinking Skills (PETS) and Javits are used for these experiences.  Among the concepts addressed in First Grade are deductive logic, analytical, convergent, critical and inventive thinking, decoding, individual thinking, creative problem solving, and creating and applying criterion questions.

Qualifying students participate in additional math enrichment experiences twice each week.  These experiences encourage students to think more deeply about grade-level math concepts, and solidify number sense and computation skills.

GRADE 2
Reading
Classroom teachers work with Gifted Services staff to provide Reading enrichment activities to meet the needs of Second Graders reading and comprehending significantly above grade level.  Students meet four times each week during small group break-out sessions to improve decoding, comprehension and fluency using Guided Reading, Accelerated Reader, and Junior Great Books programs.

Math/Critical Thinking
The Gifted Services staff works in partnership with the classroom teacher to provide opportunities for students to experience and develop thinking skills using an enrichment and diagnostic approach called Primary Education Thinking Skills (PETS).  The major learning themes review convergent thinking skills and introduce problem-solving strategies, reinforce the concepts of deductive logic using an elimination grid, introduce students to a complex system of deductive logic using a double matrix logic elimination grid, practice deductive logic in other formats, practice divergent thinking skills in problem solving, and provide opportunities for solving visual problems using maps.

Students also experience Project M2 Math curriculum developed by the College of William and Mary Center for Gifted Education.  Project M2 units focus on in-depth mathematics using research-based practices and standards in mathematics education and early childhood education. Units focus on geometry and measurement.

Grade 3
Reading
The Gifted Services staff works in partnership with classroom teachers to provide students with enriched opportunities as they work with the Collaborative Literacy curriculum.  Using an inquiry-based approach, students investigate literature from an interdisciplinary, multicultural program that includes vocabulary development, opportunity for written and oral communication, and practice with research and reasoning.  Students develop analytical and interpretive skills, persuasive writing skills and linguistic competence as they explore a range of texts and writing projects.

Math/Critical Thinking
Third grade students identified by test scores, classroom performance, and teacher recommendation are invited to participate in Enriched Math.  The third  grade program uses compacted curriculum from Grade 3 Everyday Math, supplemented with enrichment and extension activities in problem solving, critical thinking, and higher-level math concepts, to meet the needs of students requiring more challenge.

Grade 4

Fourth grade students identified by test scores, classroom performance, and teacher recommendation are invited to participate in either Enriched Math or Accelerated Math.  The fourth grade Enriched program uses compacted curriculum from the Grade 4 Everyday Math program, and enrichment and extension activities to meet the needs of students requiring more challenge.  Students participating in Accelerated Math work with the Grade 5 Everyday Math curriculum, supplemented with enrichment and extension activities in problem solving, critical thinking, and higher-level math concepts, to meet the needs of students requiring more challenge.

Grade 5
Students develop analytical and interpretive skills, persuasive writing skills and linguistic competence as they explore a range of texts and writing projects.  .

Math/Critical Thinking
Fifth grade students identified by test scores, classroom performance, and teacher recommendation are invited to participate in either Enriched Math or Accelerated Math.  The Fifth grade Enriched program uses compacted curriculum from the 5th grade Everyday Math math program, and enrichment and extension activities to meet the needs of students requiring more challenge.  Students participating in Accelerated Math work with the Grade 6 Connected Math Program (CMP) curriculum, supplemented with enrichment and extension activities in problem solving, critical thinking, and higher-level math concepts, to meet the needs of students requiring more challenge.

Grade 6

Sixth grade students identified by test scores, classroom performance, and teacher recommendation participate in either Enriched Grade 6 Connected Math Program (CMP), or an accelerated version of the 7th grade Connected Math Program (CMP).  CMP helps students build a deeper understanding of important Math ideas and enables them to develop proficient reasoning and Math communication skills.
