We will spend a lot of time drawing realistically with pencil this year. We will also learn about other cultures, do collage and learn about abstract and surreal art. 5th Symmetrical Animal

SYMMMETRICAL ANIMAL FACES

Let's make some art! We start off the year with a quick assignment where students use chalk and black paper to create a symmetrical animal face. They finish their creation with craypas patterns and shapes

5th Painted Kandinsky

KANDINSKY

Wassily Kandinsky is the father of Abstract art. The students should be very familiar with his work by 5th grade. He was inspired by music when he painted. We will create our own paintings using shape, line, texture and pattern. Students will learn about color theory and use tints and shades of an analogous color scheme to finish their work.

5th Aborigine

ABORIGINAL ANIMAL

5th graders love drawing animals! We will study the art of Austrailia and choose an wild animal to celebrate. The students will use large paper to draw their animal and then fill it with pattern. The background of the image may be realistic or based on an aborigine design.

5th Surreal Collage

SURREALISM COLLAGE

Surrealism is art based on the imagination. What happens when you put images together that don't exist?? People notice. Students viewed Surrealist artwork by Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte. Thinking like surrealists, 5th graders made collages by combining images from magazines that look real but don’t below together.  If you have old calendars with photographs of landscapes...we would love to have them!

5th Grade Self Portrait

SELF PORTRAIT

Students were first introduced to self portraits in first grade. in fifth grade we try to add a little more realism and shade the face to create a 3-D drawing. Students will add a background that relates to their life.  (not all examples show this part of the assignment)

5th Grade Clay Head

CLAY HEAD

Students will use the information they learned drawing their self portrait to make a clay head.

5th Grade Common Object

EVERYDAY OBJECT AND TRANSFORMED OBJECT

How do artists pick their subject? Claes Oldenburg used everyday objects for inpiration! Students learn about his work and his famous Minneapolis Sculpture The Spoonbridge and Cherry.
There are two parts to this assignment

1. Draw an everyday object and shade it realistically using at least three values with  pencil.

2. Transform the object into something else --add a background and realistic shading.

A knowledgeable fifth grade student:
