Students will demonstrate (1) skills and (2) understandings through (3) active participation. Summary grades are determined each semester through success in music activities and assessments. The music expectations reflect national and state standards.

A knowledgeable sixth grade student:

Demonstrates music skills

  • sings independently with accurate pitch and rhythm
  • sings songs alone and with others
  • sings and plays melodies using do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti and high do (diatonic)
  • performs rhythms and melodies using quarter notes, quarter rests, eighth notes, tied quarter notes, half notes, half rests, dotted half notes, whole notes, whole rests, sixteenth notes, the syncopated eighth-quarter-eighth pattern, and the dotted quarter-eighth note pattern in duple and triple meters (2-, 4-, and 3-beat patterns)
  • sings one part in 2-part songs
  • sings and plays expressively with varying dynamics (loudness) and tempo (speed)
  • plays melodies by ear
  • sings and plays in major and minor
  • responds musically to a conductor


Understands and applies music concepts

  • identifies practices for maintaining vocal health
  • analyzes and describes pitch, dynamics (loudness), tempo (speed), duration (length of sound), form, meter (2-, 3- or 4-beat patterns), timbre (tone quality) and styles or genres
  • analyzes music and evaluates performances using music vocabulary
  • relates music to arts, history, culture, and other disciplines
  • reads and notates melodies using do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti and high do (diatonic)
  • reads and notates rhythms using quarter notes, quarter rests, eighth notes, tied quarter notes, half notes, half rests, dotted half notes, whole notes, whole rests, sixteenth notes, syncopated eighth-quarter-eighth, and dotted quarter-eighth in duple and triple meters (2-, 4- and 3- beat patterns)
  • improvises and composes melodies using do, re, mi, sol, la and high do (pentatonic)
  • improvises and composes rhythms using quarter notes, quarter rests, eighth notes, tied quarter notes, half notes. half rests, dotted half notes, whole notes, whole rests, sixteenth notes, the syncopated eighth-quarter-eighth pattern, and the dotted quarter-eighth note pattern in duple and triple meters (2-, 4-, and 3-beat patterns)
  • composes short pieces
