Students will demonstrate (1) skills and (2) understandings through (3) active participation. Summary grades are determined each semester through success in music activities and assessments. The music expectations reflect national and state standards.

A knowledgeable fourth grade student:

Demonstrates music skills

  • sings independently with accurate pitch and rhythm
  • sings songs alone and with others
  • sings and plays melodies using do, re, mi, sol, la and high do (pentatonic scale)
  • plays melodies on the recorder
  • performs the C Major scale
  • performs rhythms and melodies using quarter notes, quarter rests, eighth notes, tied quarter notes, half notes, half rests, dotted half notes, whole notes, whole rests and sixteenth notes in duple and triple meters (2-, 4-, and 3-beat patterns)
  • sings while performing a rhythmic ostinato (pattern)
  • sings a melody while others sing an ostinato (pattern)
  • sings rounds with a group
  • sings and plays expressively with varying dynamics (loudness) and tempo (speed)
  • sings and plays in major and minor
  • responds musically to a conductor


Understands and applies music concepts

  • distinguishes between heavier and lighter vocal registers
  • identifies instruments visually and aurally
  • identifies phrase forms within songs
  • identifies music forms such as AA, AB, ABA, and AABA
  • analyzes and describes pitch, dynamics (loudness), tempo (speed), duration (length of tone), form, meter (2-, 3- or 4-beat patterns), and timbre (tone quality)
  • relates music to Minnesota cultures and heritage
  • reads and notates melodies using do, re, mi, sol, la and high do (pentatonic scale)
  • reads and notates rhythms using quarter notes, quarter rests, eighth notes, tied quarter notes, half notes, half rests, dotted half notes, whole notes, whole rests and sixteenth notes in duple and triple meters (2-, 4-, and 3-beat patterns)
  • reads and notates the C Major scale
  • improvises and composes melodies using do, re, mi, sol, la and high do (pentatonic scale)
  • improvises and composes rhythm using quarter notes, quarter rests, eighth notes, tied quarter notes, half notes, half rests, dotted half notes, whole notes and whole rests in duple and triple meters (2-, 4-, and 3- beat patterns)
  • improvises using rondo form (ABACA)
