Students will demonstrate (1) skills and (2) understandings through (3) active participation. Summary grades are determined each semester through success in music activities and assessments. The music expectations reflect national and state standards.

A knowledgeable second grade student:

Demonstrates music skills

  • sings in tune in a light head voice
  • sings songs alone and with others
  • sings and plays melodies using sol, mi and la
  • sings folk songs from memory
  • demonstrates varying dynamics (loudness) and tempo (speed)
  • sings while performing a simple rhythmic ostinato (pattern)
  • demonstrates steady beat
  • plays rhythm patterns


Understands and applies music concepts

  • identifies orchestral families of instruments
  • identifies phrase forms within songs
  • identifies AB and ABA forms
  • analyzes and responds to pitch, dynamics (loudness), tempo (speed), duration (length of sound) and form
  • relates music to various cultures and composers
  • reads and signs melodies using sol, mi and la solfege hand signs
  • reads and notates melodies using sol, mi and la
  • reads and notates rhythms using quarter notes, quarter rests, and paired eighth notes, beamed or flagged, in duple meter (2-beat patterns)
  • improvises and composes melodies using sol, mi and la
  • -improvises and composes rhythms using quarter notes, quarter rests, and paired eighth notes in duple meter (2-beat patterns)
