SYMMETRICAL BUTTERFLY

 Students create a symmetrical butterfly using a chalk outline on colored paper.
First graders will have several samples of real butterflies for inspiration or they can create their own designs.

WILD THING

First Graders have a great imagination! What if you could create your own creature? What would it look like? We read Maurice Sendak's book "Where the Wild Things Are" and then create our own Wild Thing.
The kids use texture and pattern to make their creature interesting and detailed.

CULTURE MASK

First Grade students know what symmetrical means! After looking at masks from different cultures, they created a mask of their own.

• Use symmetry to create a unique mask.
• Use symmetrical colors and cover all the paper when you're coloring.
• Create a background that highlights the mask.

FRUIT BOWL STILL LIFE

Still life is a type of drawing that has been done since the renaissance. Students will look at samples from master artists and create their own fruit bowl still life. They are encouraged to draw big and fill up the bowl. We create a unique border by stamping the paper with actual fruits and vegetables.

Learning Objectives

• Observational drawing
• Use overlap in their composition
• Use a horizontal line in the background to create a table and a wall.

FRUIT COMES ALIVE

 What if the fruit in the bowl got up and danced? Students got to look at the fun drawings of Greg Brown and imagine their fruit coming alive and doing all kinds of things.

Learning Objectives

• Add arms and legs to a fruit or a vegetable to make it come alive
• Include a background and details so that we can tell where the fruit is and what it is doing.

PORTRAIT

First Graders love to draw people. We will do a slow careful drawing of a face and learn about proportion. It might be a self portrait, a portrait of their friend or a picture of a model (Someone I like to call "The Fancy Lady")

• Draw realistically

ARCHITECTURE UNIT

Look at the world around you! We can be inspired to create art about buildings. First graders will spend several classes drawing buildings. We will start with where we live and then look at buildings around town. We will end the unit by creating a huge mural of our community.

• Notice that buildings are made up of simple shapes
• Add detail to our drawings and paper cut outs

JAPANESE UNIT

First Grade studies Japan in their classrooms and we create art to go along with their learning. The first graders will learn special techniques to create japanese flowers, draw a dragon (a symbol for spring in Japan) and create a folding screen that highlights the seasons.
